In 1606, the first Europeans landed on coasts of Australia. In 1770, James Cook claimed what he called “New South Wales” on the east coast for Great Britain. But they did not find a “terra nullius”. The often complicated and violent history between the Indigenous Australians and the settlers is long and still full of conflict. But as Nina Caplan in her article for Newsweek points out, “Aboriginal art is still not widely understood by Westerners visually schooled in the Renaissance and Impressionism.”
